Details

A fast-paced, dynamic and fun session of skills and drills led by Marion Cross teacher Ross McGee and Dartmouth ‘98 grad and Lower Merion High School basketball coach Doug Young. Young and McGee will be joined by members of the Lower Merion High School team, former Hanover High and Dartmouth coach Doc Donohue, as well as a host of other special guests.

Young began his coaching career with the Hanover and Norwich recreation programs while a student at Dartmouth and McGee and McManamy were on the first team he ever coached. Young and McGee have stayed in close touch and wanted to do something this summer to honor Sean while Young was in town with his high school team at Dartmouth basketball camp. An accomplished heli-skiing guide and beloved husband, son and friend, McManamy tragically passed earlier this year in a helicopter accident in Alaska.

Young’s Lower Merion Aces are one of the top teams in Pennsylvania and alma mater of Kobe Bryant, Young’s high school teammate.

About the Cause

Sean McManamy embodied Camp Belknap’s most revered mantra: “to seek the joy of being alive.”

Few Belknappers lived this core value more than Sean.  Sean was a renowned mountaineer, a skilled and trusted guide at the world’s highest level of climbing, skiing, and freeriding.  Sean got his start in outdoor leadership at Camp Belknap, where he spent 11 years and led his first expeditions in New Hampshire’s White Mountains.

Background on our scholarship program:

Camp Belknap is a non-profit traditional overnight summer camp for boys ages 8-16 near Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. Established in 1903, Camp Belknap today primarily serves 1200 boys each summer, with perennial Fall programming offered to the local school district and other mission-driven youth and wellness retreats. Camp Belknap prides itself on its growing scholarship initiative, providing full-tuition scholarships for over 100 boys each summer. Nearly all of these boys are NH residents, with 62% of them local to the Lakes Region.

Camp Belknap works closely with several Community Partners and organizations including schools and direct service groups.  Our Community Partners are aligned with our mission so a camper coming through one of these partnerships is supported year-round, which further enhances their leadership and character development.  Community Partners help make the Belknap experience even more accessible by helping us reach an even broader spectrum of communities. Our Community Partners help Belknap:

  • Identify deserving boys

  • Support the boys through the application process

  • Assist them with preparations for a Belknap summer

In turn, Camp Belknap commits to making a summer at camp affordable for these families through scholarships.  Each scholarship is, on average, a 5-year financial commitment; like all of our enrolled campers, returning scholarship boys are guaranteed a spot at camp until they are 16 years old.
